A Room of Ones Own

A room of one's own is a great asset for a writer. At this very moment I am sitting in my living room trying to focus on my blog with my sister hollering in the next room and having my train of thought broken constantly. If only I could do my blog in peace, I feel your pain Virginia. Women in the literature we read are inferior to men in their society, not only in the literature of the unit but in all of the literature that we've read. In A Thousand Splendid Suns(my mom's net pad won't let me italicize anything, sorry), in Things Fall Apart, in Beowulf, in Wuthering Heights, women depend on men because society has taught them that they are inferior. This could definitely be a cause to believe that theres no such thing as love, that it's a fairy tale. Before someone can really love another for who they truly are as a human being, they must first see each other as equals, not as one being superior to the other. For example, in A Doll House, Helmer sees Nora as his 'little squirrel.' He sees her as this cute little play thing, not another human being. He knows that she depends on him. When, in the end she gets into trouble, it is shown that he doesn't really love her. He enjoyed her, like a child enjoys a toy. When she ceased being convenient for him to have in his life, he basically told her that their marriage was nothing and all they could do now was keep up appearances. Because Helmer never saw Nora as his equal, he couldn't have possibly connected with her and in turn couldn't have possibly truly loved her. Since most people operated and still even operate under the thought that men are superior and women are inferior, how could a true love develop? How could a man and a woman make a connection with one another and really bond? Of course then the notion of 'true love' would seem absurd to most people, especially in a society where marriage was like a business transaction where a woman is bought (which happens in and not that long ago did happen in English society. Maybe there isn't a 'one true love' for everyone, but love exists. It is difficult to find however in a society where the belief is that men and women aren't equal as human beings but that 'Women are to be talked to as below men and above children' and 'the moral decline of our country' can ' be tied to women entering the workplace.' I think about what made it so that men claim to be superior to women? Why isn't out vice versa? I believe that this belief started way back in the cave man days. There were no 'intellectuals.' No one knew what words our education were. ' Society' was focused on where food was coming from and how to stay safe. Women nurse children and so must have had to stay with them. So, men go hunting and men fight of dangerous animals. Being strong is favorable to men so more men who are naturally strong survive to reproduce and pass on this trait to offspring. Men continue to be providers that women and children depend on. However when men cease to have to be providers and develop higher order thinking skills, they don't want to give up their ' power', it's human nature to try to make themselves some how superior to others. So they make up ridiculous theories like ' Girls begin to talk and stand on their feet sooner than boys because weeds always grow up more quickly than good crops' in order to keep their power. The thought that a woman should be subordinate to a man is obsolete. It's caveman thinking. That's my theory.

Dependence

In the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, the issue is presented that women, historically and even today have been forced to rely on men by society, tradition, and sometimes goverment.  In the literature, Mariam and her mother are completely dependent on Jalil for everything they need; their house, food, and anything else they have.  Without Jalil, Mariam's mother would most likely not be able to support Mariam and it is the same when Mariam and Laila marry Rasheed.  They don't have the ability to support children because the Taliban (the people in power) did not allow women to work.  They depended on Jalil for everything.  Even in today's American society, where women have every right that men have, there's is still an echo of the past.
